Trouble Sleeping? Try These 4 Easy Fixes

Published October 5th, 2017 by Craig Kaler

In a few weeks you’re going to gain back the 1440 minutes you lost during daylight savings time. Even though the definition of Fall in South Florida means one thing- less humidity, the pumpkins are in the stores and Starbucks is already serving up their pumpkin spiced lattes. Soon it will be dark at 5:30 pm. So the question is… Can a little extra darkness help or hurt our health?

I personally think that an extra hour is a good thing! But as of recent I’ve met a lot of people going through some sort of sleep crisis, myself included at times.

I’m certain my dog sleeps through the night because he’s not worried about what happened earlier in the day or what’s on his agenda for tomorrow. I love watching my daughter fall asleep like a rock and sleeping through the night. The reality is we have a lot of things on our brains at times and it can be challenging to turn off the little dynamo we have between our ears.

I wanted to share a few techniques and tricks to make sure you get to take full advantage of the extra hour of sleep you’ll be getting in the coming weeks

1. Set the right ambiance

Set up some ambient lighting in your home that has a red or orange hue. By doing this you’ll be turning down the daytime signal your body perceives. Try and keep the bright lights off. Get yourself an essential oil diffuser and load it up with some lavender and light a candle. Also turn down the temperature in your home before you hit the hay.

2. Schedule, schedule, schedule

Your body is a creature of habit. Try and go to sleep the same time every night. By doing this you’re setting the internal clock in your body and just like that you’ll start to get sleepy at the same time every night.

3. Exercise

I got it! Time is one of our most precious commodities. Please know that “done” is better than “perfect”. Even if you can’t get in the gym, go for a brisk walk.Training for only for 20 minutes will make a huge difference. The more intense the better!

4. Work on your breath and count backwards from 100

Try breathing through your nose instead of your mouth. Breathing through your nose stimulates your parasympathetic nervous system and induces relaxation. Try counting. If you’re conscious of your breath and count backwards from 100, it will challenge your brain to think about anything else. I personally never make it to 50.
